A Study on Emotional Responses of the Mothers of Leukemic Children



Abstract
During the period of July 20, 1976 through September 20, 1976, a study has been done on the emotional responses of 35 mothers whose children have been in university hospitals in Seoul, or under treatment for leukemia at the out-patient department. Simultaneously, another examination on the degree of contentment toward the medical teams has been performed.
This study is planned to give a comprehensive nursing to leukemia stricken children.
1. The emotional responses from the mothers:
a) Depressed but hopeful-76%
b) Powerless, conscientiously painful or hostile 57%
2. Specific factors in the children patients among sex, birth order, age, the present symptom, one of the factors that have influence on the emotional reaction of the patients mothers is the present symptom.
3. The emotional reaction of ;the mothers, according as the present symptom is indicated, is brought about as follows:
a) During the period of early diagnosis, a sense of frustration and hope has reached 64% respectively,
b) In the course of remission 100%-hopeful,
c) During the readmission for treatment, 100% belongs to, impotence.
4. Specific factors in the patients mothers, the study indicates that among the following factors-age, educational background, religion and living standard, non of the above factors has to do with the emotional responses of the patients mothers.
5. The study has also showers that there is no relationship between the emotional responses of the patients¢¥ mothers and the liability toward the medical teams. 6.37% of the mothers are satisfied with nurses, and 53% with the doctors in charge.
